Ms Fisher's Review | Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries Review

Have you seen the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries 1960’s spin-off, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries? What a fun show! If you’re looking for a cozy mystery to watch, this is one to check out.

Although I enjoyed Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, in my opinion it can’t really be classified as a cozy mystery because of her promiscuous behaviour. Check out my recent post 6 Elements of a Cozy Mystery to see why it doesn’t fit.

Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, however, definitely fits in the cozy mystery category. It’s clean, with no excessive violence, and appropriate for preteens. I watched with my youngest daughter, Thing 4, and she thought it was great.

In this spin-off of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Phryne Fisher has gone missing in the jungle, and her fun-loving niece, Peregrine Fisher, inherits her estate in Melbourne. Phryne’s gorgeous mansion is now home to the Adventuresses Club, and her modern, 1960’s house becomes Peregrine’s new home.

Like her detective aunt, Peregrine helps her friends solve mysteries and becomes a detective herself. Also similar, is the police officer love interest plot line. Unlike Phryne, however, Peregrine is not portrayed as promiscuous (other than a quick climb into the backseat with her boyfriend at the beginning of the first show).

Another similarity to the original Miss Fisher show, is the glorious costuming. Peregrine’s wardrobe is a feature in itself as she dons the most modern sixties fashions. They’re quite groovy. 😉

Even with all the similarities to the original show, this show also has many differences, and holds up well all on it’s own with creative plot lines, intriguing mysteries, and flavourful characters. There’s no need to watch the old Miss Fisher to follow along with Peregrine’s antics.

Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries airs on Acorn TV. So far, there’s been one season, with four episodes. Each episode runs about an hour-and-a-half though, making it more like four movies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show and I hope it returns for another season. If your looking for other recommendations, read last week’s post, 5 Cozy Mystery Shows to Watch for some ideas.
